![]() ![]() Hence, you’ll still have control of the car, whereas a regular tire can destabilize your vehicle, even when driving in a straight line.įurthermore, the fact that you won’t carry a spare in the trunk means more space for cargo, something that customers will certainly be happy about. It was replaced.Run-flat tires have been one of the most significant advancements in the industry, as they negate the need for a spare tire but also bring several other advantages.įor starters, these tires are much safer in case of a complete air loss or a blowout because the sidewall is strong enough to support the weight of the vehicle. In any event, I would not trust the tire, because I would expect it to have internal damage. ![]() The impact was sufficiently violent to cause damage to the tire sidewall (my guess) and I was certain it would not be repairable. In another case, I damaged an RFT in my 535xi after striking debris on a highway at night at reasonably high speed. The tire has been fine following that repair. They installed a tiny device that looks something like a conventional patch with a pin extending from it. ![]() The tire was repaired by an "RFT certified" tire dealer with no problems. The screw caused a slow leak, but I kept the tire inflated (see my Post on the benefits of a manual tire gauge). I had one tire on my 435xi repaired after driving for at least 80 km (50 mi) with a screw imbedded in the tread. No one else should go near your wheel/tire setup. The dealer has to have the equipment and trained staff to mount and dismount RFTs on alloy wheels. You cannot even begin to determine whether or not your tires are repairable until you find a dealer that is "run-flat certified". (Such damage might be evident in a slight discolouration of the sidewalk - due to excess heat buildup from flexing). The *main exceptions* would be:Ī) if the damage (say, a puncture) occurs on, or near the sidewall ī) if the puncture is large (more than, say, 1/16 or perhaps 1/8in.) orĬ) if the tire has been driven a significant distance when uninflated and has suffered heat damage. ![]() A run-flat tire CAN be repaired in many cases. ![]()
